US President Donald Trump’s decision to reduce the American military presence in Europe has caused great concern within NATO. While it is reported that Washington is preparing to leave the burden of continental defense to European allies, NATO leadership has warned of a “historic transition process that will last for years.” Fears are growing in European capitals that the security balance could be shaken in the face of the Russian threat.
elchi reports that the steps taken by the US President Donald Trump administration to reduce its military presence in Europe are seen as the beginning of a new era within NATO. An analysis published by Novinite, a security platform based in Eastern Europe, emphasized that Washington is not preparing to withdraw from Europe entirely, but wants to gradually shift the burden of continental defense to European allies. On the other hand, NATO officials state that this transformation will be a “controlled transition that will last several years.” In recent weeks, the US Department of Defense’s decision to withdraw some units from Europe has been closely monitored, especially in Germany and Poland. According to the Pentagon’s plan, the US will withdraw one of its four brigade combat teams in Europe.
Each consists of 4000 soldiers
With the reduction of these units, each consisting of approximately 4000 soldiers, Washington is expected to gradually reduce its military burden in Europe. It was also reported that the planned new troop deployment to Poland has been halted. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte claimed that the process would not be sudden. According to Rutte, since European countries have increased their defense spending in recent years, the US readjusting the burden-sharing is a “logical development.” NATO leadership states that the withdrawal of American soldiers will not weaken the alliance’s deterrence and the process will continue in accordance with NATO’s defense plans.
US Nuclear Umbrella
NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Alexus Grynkewich, also announced that the withdrawal would be spread over years. Grynkewich stated that as European countries strengthen their own military capabilities, the US will continue to provide only “essential strategic capabilities.” These include satellite intelligence, strategic bombers, command and control systems, and the US nuclear umbrella.
Europe is worried
There is serious concern in European capitals. The withdrawal process that has now begun is causing security concerns in some countries, especially since the US military presence in Europe was reinforced after the Russia-Ukraine war. European diplomats believe that a rapid American withdrawal could create a defense vacuum on Europe’s eastern flank. The Trump administration’s approach has not changed for a long time. Since his first term, Trump has criticized NATO members for not increasing their defense spending.
