“We are waiting for an amnesty by the end of the year, but we don’t know for sure. Because the Commission on Matters of Amnesty under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan has not yet convened. However, there is a possibility of an amnesty decree at the end of the current year. I wish everyone would be pardoned, not a single political prisoner would remain, so we could rest easy and attend to the affairs of ordinary citizens. You know that there are many court cases where the law is violated, not only in political matters but also in other issues, the rights of many people are violated.”
elchi reports that human rights defender Novella Jafaroglu said this in an interview with Pravda.az.
N. Jafaroglu also commented on the call for the release of prisoners in the resolution adopted by the European Parliament: “Europeans must understand that our attitude towards them is the same as their attitude towards us. The European Parliament and the European Union have always treated Azerbaijan negatively and incorrectly. We have been witnessing human rights violations for 30 years. Currently, thousands of people are victims of mines, is this not a violation of human rights? Cities are on mines. But they do not take any measures against them, they do nothing. Of course, we must negotiate with Europe, we must talk, but when we see their attitude towards us, our state also does not listen to their words, does not act according to what they say. We want the issue of political prisoners to end in Azerbaijan, but not because of someone’s words, not at the dictate of Europe.”
