The Japanese government is preparing to create a unified structure involving representatives from government agencies and private businesses to implement centralized control over the development, production, and export of weapons.
According to the “Kyodo” news agency, this structure is expected to become operational on October 1, 2027.
Based on the information, Tokyo intends to consider the experience of the US and EU countries, which have faced a shortage of production capacity due to insufficient investment in the military industry in previous years. The Japanese government plans to create potential for long-term combat operations in advance, utilizing new military technologies, primarily drones.
In the initial phase, the new structure will consist of 300 representatives from the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, as well as employees of private corporations. By 2031, its staff is planned to reach 600 people. In particular, it is planned to involve representatives of leading trading corporations with extensive experience in concluding deals abroad.
Furthermore, Japan plans to organize arms exports through a centralized unified negotiation mechanism with foreign buyers. Relevant draft laws are expected to be submitted to parliament in the first half of 2027.
