“Russia is fighting to preserve the UN’s existence” – Zakharova

“Russia consistently advocates for not allowing the United Nations to turn into a mere formal entity, but rather to preserve it as a truly effective mechanism capable of responding to modern challenges”.

elchi reports that this was stated by the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova.

According to the diplomat, Moscow’s goal is not for the UN to serve only the maintenance of an international body of bureaucrats, but to focus on solving pressing global problems.

Zakharova cited the issue of maritime piracy as a clear example of the organization’s importance. She emphasized that refusing to comply with international law will inevitably return the global community to an archaic era – an era that should remain only in the pages of adventure novels and feature films.

Furthermore, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs specifically highlighted the role of the UN General Assembly’s rostrum, which can be used for speeches almost every day. In Zakharova’s opinion, the absence of such a platform would deprive dozens of states of the opportunity to openly and legitimately express their positions on the global stage. The diplomat concluded her remarks by saying: “This is precisely why we are fighting for this organization”.

Earlier, the Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council, Grigory Karasin, shared details regarding the attitude towards the Russian delegation. According to him, interest in that delegation at the UN General Assembly was growing day by day.

He also noted that the UN’s potential is not exhausted, but reforms are needed. The senator emphasized that UN member states are interested in it becoming a global body that contributes to the establishment of justice in economic, humanitarian, and other areas of activity.

On September 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow is ready to restore relations with Europe.
