The European Commission (EC) has begun investigating the implementation of directives against human trafficking and money laundering by European Union (EU) countries.

Procedures have been initiated against 20 countries due to the incomplete transposition of the revised EU directive on combating human trafficking into national legislation. Among them are Greece, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Romania.
The updated directive strengthens criminal liability for new forms of exploitation, including in the digital environment, and provides for additional measures for the investigation of such crimes and the protection of victims.
Separately, the EC has sent notices to 18 countries regarding shortcomings in the fight against money laundering and the incomplete implementation of European Union legislation. Among them are Belgium, Greece, Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, and Finland.
