The European Union (EU), Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, India, and Kenya have launched the “Partners for Multilateralism” initiative to strengthen international law and multilateral cooperation.
elchi reports that a written statement was issued by the EU Council regarding this initiative, which was launched in New York within the framework of the 81st session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
The statement announced that the “Partners for Multilateralism” initiative is being implemented through the joint efforts of Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, India, Kenya, and the European Union.
Noting that countries from different continents share a common belief, the statement says: “The challenges we face cannot be solved by any country alone.”
The document identifies the common goals of the initiative as adherence to international law, strengthening multilateral cooperation, and ensuring peace and prosperity for peoples.
Emphasizing that the challenges of the era, from climate change to global health, and from technological transformation to international security, require collective solutions, the statement noted: “Therefore, our response to these challenges must also be collective.”
The statement concluded with the following message: “Our message is simple: we are stronger when we act together, and we can turn our shared principles into concrete results together.”
“We can solve problems collectively.”
Speaking at a press conference on the initiative at the UN Headquarters in New York, EU Council President Antonio Costa said: “The EU is a shining example of an organization that emerged from the ruins of the Second World War to bring prosperity and peace to the European continent, and we are committed to working with our partners around the world.”
Stating that the initiative is not intended to replace the UN, but rather to strengthen the UN and other multilateral institutions, Costa added: “This is not a matter of choice. It is not just idealism either. We need it because we can only solve the problems we face today collectively.”
