Due to the intensification of the drought caused by the “El Niño” climate phenomenon, Panama plans to further reduce ship traffic in the Panama Canal, one of the world’s most important maritime transport routes.
elchi reports that this canal, which accounts for 5 percent of global maritime trade and approximately 40 percent of US container shipments, is a preferred route—especially by companies trading between China, Asia, and the US—because it reduces costs and transit times.
According to the draft submitted to the Panamanian parliament, starting from October, an average of 29.5 ships per day will be allowed to pass; this figure represents an 18 percent decrease compared to the 36 ships recorded in August.
In September, authorities had already reduced the number of daily transits from 36 to 32 due to the drought.
