The Japanese Ministry of Defense intends to establish a major center for the production and basing of various types of surface and underwater unmanned vehicles at the port of Kure in Hiroshima Prefecture. For this purpose, an industrial zone previously occupied by facilities of the Nippon Steel metallurgical corporation will be utilized.
“Elchi” reports that this was announced by the Kyodo news agency.
The center is intended to house military units. The contract for the transfer of this land plot has already been signed, and as of September 1, the Ministry of Defense has begun negotiations to attract private companies interested in the production of naval drones and possessing relevant developments to the facility.
The practical establishment of the center will begin in the 2028 fiscal year (ending March 31, 2029). The Japanese Ministry of Defense intends to begin the development of naval unmanned vehicles from the 2027 fiscal year, specifically underwater drones designed to hunt enemy submarines and launch missile strikes against a wide range of targets.
