EC prepares new response measures against sudden influx of migrants

The European Commission (EC) is preparing new legal measures that will help EU countries respond more flexibly to sudden mass influxes of migrants.

“Elchi” reports that the “Politico” publication informed about this, citing sources.

According to the sources, the initiatives may include the coordinated return of individuals in groups. The publication writes that it is not excluded that these plans will be announced by EC head Ursula von der Leyen during her annual State of the Union address on September 16. A “Politico” interlocutor stated that during a lunch with EU ambassadors last week, von der Leyen touched upon the idea of “group deportation” and received a “generally positive reaction” from the participants.

According to the information, the European Commission will also provide legal recommendations on the circumstances under which countries can suspend the processing of asylum applications in certain cases. “We can provide legal texts and interpretations, but the member states will decide for themselves how to act,” one of the EU officials said.
