Since the end of the Patriotic War, 438 people have fallen victim to mines and other explosive ordnance, 73 of whom have lost their lives.
elchi reports that this was stated by Vugar Suleymanov, Chairman of the Board of the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA), at an event held within the framework of “Baku Climate Action Week 2026”.
He noted that since the Patriotic War, 300,565 hectares of land have been cleared by ANAMA and other agencies involved in humanitarian mine action, and 261,705 mines and other explosive ordnance have been neutralized. For projects reflecting environmental assessment, such as the restoration of the forest fund, Friendship Forest, national parks like Basitchay State Nature Reserve, state nature sanctuaries, riverside areas, restoration of water basins, geological exploration works, search areas for non-metallic mineral deposits, as well as the installation of early warning systems, 31,037 hectares have been cleared; additionally, 132,447 hectares for agriculture, 71,202 hectares for the development of residential infrastructure, 12,443 hectares for energy infrastructure, and 8,447 hectares for land reclamation and water management projects have been cleared of explosive ordnance.
V. Suleymanov said that in order to ensure a safe and sustainable return to the liberated territories, along with the mine clearance process, areas highly contaminated with mines and other explosive ordnance are being conserved and fenced off.
