At least 16 people have died and nearly 400 tourists are missing as a result of floods in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, located on the border with China.
elchi reports that the “EFE” agency announced this on Wednesday, citing information from Nepalese law enforcement agencies.
A police representative did not rule out that the death toll could rise.
According to the Nepal Tourism Board, at least 384 tourists are considered missing following the floods. Among them are 93 Nepalese residents and 291 foreign nationals; citizens of the United Kingdom, USA, Australia, the Netherlands, Malaysia, and India are particularly prominent. Additionally, the citizenship of 111 people is still being determined.
Nine police officers serving on the Nepal-China border are also on the list of missing persons.
The citizenship of the deceased has not been specified.
During search and rescue operations, security forces were able to save 25 people. Operations are ongoing, with 14 helicopters involved in the process.
The flooding was caused by a rise in the water level of the Bhote-Koshi River, which originates in Tibet and flows through Nepal. The areas most affected were settlements located along the river, particularly Timure and Syaprubesi. The water flooded markets and residential neighborhoods, caused serious damage to police stations and hydroelectric facilities, and destroyed bridges and roads.
According to preliminary information, the rise in the river’s water level may have been caused by a landslide in Tibet.
