As investigations continue into the accident that resulted in the death of a ground handling worker in Montreal, Canada, a passenger on a flight to France recounted the horrific moments he witnessed via the aircraft’s landing gear camera.
elchi reports that describing the incident as French Bee flight 351 was preparing for takeoff, Matthieu Douvenou said he saw the aircraft’s nose landing gear on his screen. Douvenou said: “The ground handling worker suddenly stumbled. At that moment, the plane pushed back and we felt an impact. I immediately realized that something very serious had happened.”
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers announced that the worker who died in the accident was 39-year-old Oscar Robayo. It is reported that Robayo worked as a ramp agent at Samsic, a company providing baggage and passenger services at the airport.
The incident occurred on Monday at 18:00 local time on the French Bee flight scheduled to fly to Paris. The company stated that the exact cause of the accident, which occurred during a pushback operation, has not yet been determined.
The airport operator stated that emergency teams arrived at the scene around 19:30. Despite all efforts at the hospital, Robayo, who was seriously injured, could not be saved.
The airport management characterized the incident as a “tragic workplace accident” and offered condolences for the deceased worker.
Douvenou stated that a slight jolt was felt at the moment of impact, a passenger screamed, and another passenger who identified herself as a nurse tried to help. Douvenou noted that the cabin crew turned off the camera feed about 30 seconds after the incident.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has launched an investigation into the accident and sent a team of experts to the area. The Ministry of Labour and Social Development also announced that it has launched an investigation to determine whether the employer fulfilled its health and safety obligations.
