The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered the inspection of hundreds of Boeing 737 Max aircraft due to potential cracks in the fuselage. The agency warned that undetected damage could compromise the structural integrity of the aircraft.
elchi reports that the airworthiness directive covers approximately 471 US-registered Boeing 737 Max 8, Max 9, and Max 8-200 aircraft.
FAA stated that the cracks were discovered on the right side of the aircraft, near the forward galley, in the structural reinforcement area around the forward service door.
Airlines are required to inspect the affected area according to a schedule determined by the aircraft’s service life and are prohibited from returning the aircraft to service without repairing any detected cracks.
Boeing stated that engineering analyses are being conducted to determine the cause of the cracks and that work is underway on design changes to prevent such problems in the future.
The FAA announced that the necessary inspection intervals allow for the detection of cracks before they pose a threat to the aircraft’s structure, and there is no need to ground the aircraft. The directive is reported to take effect on September 10.
