The European Union (EU) has warned that wildfires could soon engulf all of Europe.
“Elchi” reports that the Financial Times (FT) newspaper stated this, citing experts.
Professor Guillermo Rein of Imperial College London warned that the depletion of national forces, especially aviation, will deprive European countries of the ability to help each other — which will “significantly reduce Europe’s ability to extinguish the largest forest fires.”
It is noted that Greece, Italy, and parts of Central Europe will be the most vulnerable regions to forest fires.
According to the European Copernicus climate monitoring service, the rapidly increasing area of land burned by wildfires in Europe since the beginning of July is approaching the 500,000-hectare mark. The publication states that the fires have caused record carbon dioxide emissions — with 9 megatons recorded in the single week from July 22 to 29.
