Ten mountaineers led by award-winning Nepali climber Nirmal Purja have gone missing following an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan.
elchi reports that the Alpine Club of Pakistan stated on its social media account, “We have received extremely disturbing news regarding an avalanche involving a team of mountaineers on Broad Peak in the Karakoram mountains.”
The statement notes that the team consisted of American, Chinese, Omani, and Nepali climbers led by the award-winning Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, and all resources are being mobilized in cooperation with the Pakistani government to locate the climbers. Earlier this month, Purja successfully climbed Gasherbrum II in Pakistan without supplemental oxygen, marking his 57th ascent to an altitude of 8035 meters.
