The Brazilian government has stated that the US decision to impose a 25 percent tariff on certain products imported from Brazil is a result of its refusal to accept Washington’s “illogical” demands regarding strategic sectors of the Brazilian economy.
“Elchi” reports that Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira criticized the US in a statement in the capital, Brasilia, for its decision to impose a 25 percent tariff on certain products imported from Brazil.
Stating that they held numerous meetings to resolve problems with the US, Vieira said: “It is extremely clear that what really bothers the US government is that Brazil did not bow to the excessive demands and unreasonable impositions put forward during the negotiations.” Vieira stated that the US wants Brazil to open its strategic sectors to the US without any reciprocity, adding: “In other words, they were demanding our surrender.”
Vieira emphasized that they have held more than 30 meetings at all levels – in person, online, and by phone – since the beginning of last year to discuss all aspects of the trade agenda between the two countries, and claimed that his government has adopted a constructive approach.
