In the capital, many people are sleeping on rooftops at night to escape the intense heat caused by prolonged power outages.
Many families living in old apartment buildings in Havana have been without water for days, as the pumps that fill the water tanks in the buildings run on electricity.
51-year-old Yunaisi Durruti said that water has not flowed from the taps in her home for a week. Even when electricity is available, the tanks often do not fill up due to cuts in the city’s water network.
Durruti explained that she has to go to her family’s home in a neighborhood with fewer power outages to shower, cook, and wash clothes, and she keeps her refrigerator empty to prevent food from spoiling.
