Carney: We have significantly increased defense spending

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the defense burden within NATO is increasingly shifting from the US to Canada and European countries, and that his country has significantly increased its defense spending.
elchi reports that Carney made these remarks to journalists ahead of the 36th NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government.
The Canadian Prime Minister said: “The summit is taking place at a time when the nature of war is changing rapidly and the threats we face, especially with hybrid warfare, hypersonic missiles, and autonomous warfare technologies, are becoming increasingly diverse.”
Carney said: “Russia is a direct threat.”
Carney noted that the burden-sharing within the Alliance is shifting from the US to Canada and Europe, and that Canada has significantly increased its defense spending. “Speaking on behalf of Canada, you can see a major increase in our defense spending.” Carney stated that Canada allocates 1.5 percent of its gross domestic product to defense, and this ratio will reach 4 percent in the next two years. He noted that he had a long meeting with US President Donald Trump before coming to Ankara, and added that Trump wants to see a change in burden-sharing within NATO, and that this process has begun and is accelerating.
Carney claimed that Iran acted “irresponsibly” by targeting facilities in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and emphasized that they want the tension in the region to decrease.
