Delta Air Lines announced that one of its planes was hit by fireworks while landing in Chicago during the July 4th celebrations. The airline stated that the aircraft landed safely, taxied to the gate, and the incident is under investigation.
elchi reports that Delta flight 1076, an Airbus A319 departing from Atlanta and flying to Chicago Midway International Airport, collided with fireworks during landing.
According to air traffic control audio recordings, the flight crew reported hearing and feeling a loud explosion during the fireworks display.
A crew member told the air traffic controller that they hoped the sound was just fireworks exploding under the plane, but they definitely felt a strong blast. Investigations are ongoing.
Despite the incident, the plane completed its landing safely and taxied to the gate without any issues. Delta Air Lines stated that the matter is still being assessed. Chicago police have not yet released a statement regarding the incident.
