Azerbaijan will connect its energy system with the European Union (EU).
elchi reports that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated this on July 1 in Baku while making a press statement with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.
According to her, after the suspension of Russian gas supplies to Europe, Azerbaijan has played a decisive role in ensuring the EU’s energy security, and the “Southern Gas Corridor” has become a “success story” in the supply of energy resources:
“For this, I express my gratitude to you. Now we are at the next stage.”
The head of the European Commission noted that Azerbaijan is implementing new energy projects, including projects in the field of renewable energy.
Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that Azerbaijan has significant potential in the Caspian region and can become an important energy hub for the supply of clean electricity:
“We support your plans for the integration of regional energy networks. Azerbaijan will connect its energy system with the European Union. This will also create opportunities for the export of additional gas volumes. In this context, we have also accepted your proposal. I welcome your initiative to lay an electric cable between Azerbaijan and Armenia; this is a very important step for the future.”
