Reuters: NATO’s Albania summit is at risk due to low defense spending

The NATO summit scheduled for 2027 in Albania, announced by the leaders of the alliance’s countries, may not take place due to the difficulties Tirana is facing in increasing its defense spending.

elchi reports that this was stated by the Reuters agency, citing sources in the leadership of European countries.

According to the agency, the initial plans to hold the 2027 summit in Albania were included in the final statement of the meeting of NATO leaders held last year in the Netherlands. At that time, it was also announced that the 2026 summit would be held on July 7-8 in Ankara, Turkey. According to Reuters sources, there is no mention of the date and location of the 2027 summit in the draft final documents of the meeting to be held in Ankara.

The agency’s interlocutors noted that Albania’s poor performance in implementing plans to increase defense spending could trigger a negative reaction from Washington. At the same time, European NATO countries are trying to demonstrate concrete results to the US in increasing the financing of the defense sector, so focusing attention on Albania could worsen Washington’s position.
