It has been reported that Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil terminal in the Persian Gulf, was targeted 548 times during the war that began with US-Israeli attacks on February 28.
elchi reports that, according to a news piece in Iran’s “Shargh” newspaper, the governor of Kharg Island, Negahdar Hosseinpour, stated at a conference attended by President Masoud Pezeshkian and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni that the island was specifically targeted during the war because it is the main oil terminal.
Sharing information about the attacks, Hosseinpour said: “During the Third Forced War, more than 548 missiles were fired at Kharg Island, and in one of the most intense attacks, on March 17, the island was struck 50 times.” Sharing information that six passenger ships were also targeted by the US in an attempt to cut off the island’s connection to the mainland, Hosseinpour stated that thanks to the intervention of state-owned boats and fishing vessels, the movement of island residents and workers to and from the island was not interrupted, and the connection with the mainland was not severed. Hosseinpour noted that even during the war, despite the attacks, more than 90 percent of the country’s oil exports were carried out from Kharg Island. Located approximately 30 kilometers from the Iranian mainland and about 55 kilometers from the port of Bushehr, Kharg Island is known as the country’s main oil export terminal.
The island, which US President Donald Trump has frequently stated he wanted to seize, was targeted multiple times by the US during the war.
