elchi reports that, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a 7.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded 26 kilometers southwest of the town of Kablalan in the Soccsksargen region of Sarangani province.
The US Geological Survey stated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 55.2 kilometers.
After the earthquake, 10 aftershocks ranging from 4.6 to 6.5 in magnitude were recorded, and a tsunami warning was issued in the region and surrounding countries. At least 8 people have died.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged citizens living in areas at risk of a tsunami to move to higher ground immediately. He stated that the government has been mobilized and that disaster response agencies are on standby. The Malaysian Meteorological Department also issued a tsunami warning for the state of Sabah on the island of Borneo.
