Good news for drivers: Penalty point limit may be doubled

A proposal to increase the threshold for deprivation of driving rights from 20 to 40-50 points has been discussed in the Milli Majlis.

elchi reports that, according to the proposal voiced at today’s parliamentary session, it is considered appropriate to increase the current 20-point limit for professional drivers and those engaged in taxi activities.

It was stated that drivers working on intra-city and inter-regional routes spend 5-8 times more time on the roads compared to ordinary drivers. Especially for those engaged in taxi activities, driving is the main source of income, and most of them are the sole breadwinners for their families.

During the discussions, it was noted that drivers who are behind the wheel for long hours reach the 20-point limit more quickly due to minor traffic violations. As a result, the loss of driving rights leads to the deprivation of their source of income, negatively affects the family budget, and in some cases, causes unemployment and financial problems.

It was pointed out that the current 20-point limit creates unequal conditions for those whose profession is driving. While ordinary drivers can use alternative means of transport, professional drivers lose their income when they lose their driving rights.

The proposals include increasing the threshold for deprivation of driving rights from 20 to 40-50 points, applying the point system only to gross violations, and limiting penalties to fines only for first-time minor offenses.
