Reconstruction of Sarsang reservoir to begin this year

Reconstruction of the Sarsang reservoir will begin this year.

elchi reports that this was stated by Ilham Guliyev, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Regional Water Reclamation Service under the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan (ADSEA), during a media tour to the Karabakh Economic Region organized by the agency on the occasion of the professional holiday “June 5 – Water Management and Reclamation Workers’ Day”.

He noted that the reservoir has a capacity of 560 million cubic meters:

“The useful capacity of the reservoir is 500 million cubic meters.

There is a 50-megawatt hydroelectric power plant fed by the Sarsang reservoir. The Sugovushan reservoir is located 20 kilometers downstream from the reservoir to regulate water flow.

At the same time, major repairs of Sugovushan and the Tartarchay left-bank and main canal were carried out in 2022–2023. The remaining right-bank canal will also undergo major repairs once demining is completed.

Sarsang reservoir is of great importance. It provides irrigation for approximately 100,000 hectares of farmland across six of our districts. This is of immense significance. During the occupation, Armenian separatists closed the reservoir. They prevented water from reaching the lower areas when it was needed, but released it when it was not, causing harm to our citizens.”

He noted that the height of the reservoir dam is 125 meters, the length is 555 meters, and the width at the top is 12 meters:

“The water depth here is 103 meters. The water level according to the Baltic system is 528 meters.

Currently, approximately 320 million cubic meters of water have accumulated in the Sarsang reservoir, and the accumulation continues.”

“All the work carried out here is funded by the state of Azerbaijan,” he added.
