Estonia to build a military base on the Russian border

Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur has announced plans to build a military base in Narva, which borders Russia. His words were quoted by the ministry’s press service.

Pevkur specified that the construction of the base will begin this month.

During a meeting with the leaders of Narva, an agreement was reached that the Narva city authorities would support the construction of the Defense Forces base in June.

The Estonian Defense Minister said:

The minister added that the military town will strengthen national defense and “increase the state’s presence in the border city.”

At the end of May, officials from the Estonian Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that stationary anti-drone detection and monitoring systems had been installed on the country’s southeastern border between Latvia and Russia.

On May 5, the commander of the Estonian Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Andrus Merilo, claimed that Russia is planning to attack the republic in 2027.
