Event to be held on the commissioning of the BTK railway line after modernization

On June 2, an event will be held at the Akhalkalaki railway and logistics complex in Georgia regarding the commissioning of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars (BTK) railway line, one of the region’s important freight transport routes, following its modernization.

This was reported to elchi by ADY.

The event will be attended by officials from Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey, as well as heads of railway and port administrations.

It should be noted that on May 18, in Baku, with the participation of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, and the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, the Protocol of the 41st meeting of the Coordination Council on the rehabilitation, reconstruction, and construction of the railway section from Marabda to the border of the Republic of Turkey (Kartsaxi) was signed by the Minister of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan, Rashad Nabiyev, and the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Mariam Kvrivishvili, within the framework of the implementation of the new Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway line project. This document confirmed the completion and final acceptance of the modernization works on the BTK railway project.

In 2024, “Azerbaijan Railways” CJSC (ADY) carried out modernization works on the 184-kilometer section of the line passing through the territory of Georgia in order to increase the capabilities of the BTK, which is an important segment of the Middle Corridor.

The 5-stage project covered 13 railway stations, 55 bridges, 8 traction substations, 320 buildings, and artificial engineering structures (bridges, overpasses, crossings, etc.). Within the framework of the project, 30.3 km of new railway line, a wheelset changing station, and rehabilitation and reconstruction works on 153.1 km of the existing railway were carried out.

As a result of the work done, the annual freight capacity of the BTK has been increased from 1 million tons to 5 million tons, making this line one of the more functional land routes from China and Central Asia towards Europe.
