Europe refuses to unblock full funds for Hungary

The European Commission (EC) is not ready to unfreeze all of Hungary’s previously blocked funds, despite the change of government in the country.

elchi reports that this was stated by the “Politico” publication.

According to the report, the team of the new Prime Minister Peter Magyar is negotiating with Brussels for the allocation of 10.4 billion euros from the EU’s pandemic recovery fund.

Journalists note that the EC is only prepared to unfreeze the grant portion of the package (worth 6.5 billion euros), but is opposed to the allocation of 3.9 billion euros in loans. Brussels doubts that Budapest will be able to implement all necessary reforms before the program expires on August 31, the report says.

On April 12, the opposition Tisza party won the parliamentary elections in Hungary. Prime Minister Viktor Orban admitted the defeat of his Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Alliance party.
