UN extends its mission in South Sudan for another year

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has been extended for another year following a resolution proposed by the US.

The resolution proposed by the US was put to a vote in the United Nations (UN) Security Council. In the vote, the resolution regarding South Sudan was adopted with 13 votes in favor, with China and Russia abstaining. The resolution states that “the mandate of UNMISS has been extended until April 30, 2027, and during this period, the mission will continue its tasks of protecting civilians, facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid, supporting the peace process, and monitoring violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.”
