An interesting situation has emerged in the “Ekstraklasa”, the top tier of Polish football.
“Elchi” reports that despite there being only 6 rounds left in the intense season, 17 out of the 18 clubs in the league still have a chance to become champions.
There is only a 13-point difference between the leader “Lech Poznan” and “Widzew Lodz”, who are in 17th place. Thus, all clubs except the last-placed “Bruk-Bet Termalica” mathematically retain the possibility of winning the title.
Furthermore, “Legia Warsaw”, the country’s most titled club which has never left the top flight since 1945, is facing the threat of relegation.
The club, which has been national champion 15 times, winner of the Polish Cup 21 times, and the Polish Super Cup 6 times, is currently in the relegation zone with 34 points.
In general, the Polish League, which has seen intense competition in recent seasons, has had 3 different clubs win the league for the first time in their history since 2019. Specifically, “Piast” in the 2018/19 season, “Rakow” in the 2022/23 season, and “Jagiellonia” in the 2023/24 season won their first Ekstraklasa titles.
It should be noted that all three of these clubs have been opponents of our representatives in European competitions. “Piast” faced “Qarabag” in the 2013/14 Europa League season, “Jagiellonia” played against “Gabala” in the 2017/18 Europa League season, and “Rakow” met “Qarabag” in the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League season.
