Lavrov warned about the risk of a nuclear incident after new US strikes on Iran.
“Elchi” reports that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with Al-Arabiya that a new US strike on Iranian nuclear facilities would have serious consequences for the region and Russia.
Earlier, CBS News reported, citing sources, that the US military was ready to strike Iran on February 21, but US President Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision.
Lavrov noted that in June last year, strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities forced Tehran to reconsider the issue of physical protection of nuclear materials under IAEA control and “untouchable”.
According to The Wall Street Journal, during US-Iran talks in Geneva, Tehran offered to send part of its highly enriched uranium reserves to a third party such as Russia to address Washington’s main concerns about the nuclear program. According to the publication, Iran is ready to suspend enrichment for up to three years. However, the Trump administration insists on a complete halt to the program. During the talks, the US is increasing its military presence in the region, and Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz.
