General amnesty declared in Syria

Syrian President Ahmad Shara issued a decree declaring a general amnesty.
“Elchi” reports that Syrian President Ahmad Shara issued a large-scale general amnesty decree before the start of Ramadan. According to the decree, the life sentence will be reduced to 20 years, and half of the temporary hard labor sentence will be abolished. In addition, penalties for minor crimes and some petty crimes will be completely abolished.
The decree also includes crimes such as smuggling, certain cybercrimes, violations of currency exchange regulations, and violations of the prohibition of transactions in foreign currencies other than the Syrian lira.
3-month deadline for handing over weapons
A special condition was set for persons convicted of possession of weapons and ammunition. According to this condition, the sentences of those who hand over their weapons to the relevant authorities within 3 months after the decree comes into force will be completely pardoned.
In order to benefit from the amnesty, those involved in kidnapping crimes must voluntarily release the victim without any compensation, and the perpetrators must surrender to the security forces within a certain period of time.
Exceptions for the seriously ill and the elderly
The new rule also includes exceptions for the elderly and the seriously ill. It was announced that prisoners with age or health risks may also benefit from the amnesty after examinations and medical evaluations by the relevant health councils.
On the other hand, those who commit human trafficking, torture, serious human rights violations against the Syrian people, and some other serious crimes remain outside the general amnesty.
