Eight skiers have died in an avalanche on Castle Peak in California, USA.
“Elchi” reports that bad news has come from the avalanche disaster on Castle Peak, part of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, USA. The Nevada City Sheriff’s Office stated that the number of skiers, previously announced as 16, is currently 15.
Nevada City Sheriff Shannan Moon stated that the bodies of 8 of the 9 missing skiers have been found, and the search for the 1 missing skier is continuing.
Nevada City Sheriff’s Office officer Russell Green stated that the bodies of 8 people were found very close to each other, and that 3 of the dead were guides. Green also explained that the bodies have not yet been removed from the area due to the difficult terrain and weather conditions.
The Nevada City Sheriff’s Office previously announced that six skiers were rescued alive from under the avalanche.
This avalanche is the deadliest in the US since the 1981 avalanche on Mount Rainier in Washington, which killed 11 climbers. According to the National Avalanche Center, 25-30 people die in avalanches in the US every winter.
