It is reported that NASA’s “Neil Gehrels Swift” Observatory has begun an uncontrolled descent towards Earth 22 years after starting its mission.
elchi reports that the U.S. Space Force has confirmed that the observatory, whose orbit has been lowered due to strong solar activity in recent years, has entered the atmosphere near Indonesia.
According to “Space.com”, satellite tracking expert Jonathan McDowell, citing U.S. Space Force data, stated that the “Swift” Observatory re-entered Earth’s atmosphere north of the island of Sumatra.
The extent to which the approximately 1.5-ton spacecraft burned up and turned to ash upon entering the atmosphere has not yet been disclosed.
NASA officials had previously predicted that a large portion of the “Swift” Observatory would burn up and disintegrate during its descent; they also noted that the probability of any surviving debris causing damage is extremely low.
A spacecraft named “Link”, developed by the defense technology company “Katalyst Space Technologies” and launched from the Marshall Islands on July 3rd, was intended to approach the “Swift” Observatory and lift it to a higher orbit, as the observatory was descending faster than expected.
However, the “Link” spacecraft was unable to complete this mission due to problems with its propulsion system and reaction wheels used for attitude control.
