Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has announced plans for the construction of the second and third nuclear power plants in the country.
According to elchi, he announced this during a meeting with investors on Friday.
The head of state emphasized that Uzbekistan pays great attention to nuclear energy, especially considering the increase in uranium production and the accumulated experience in this sector.
“Tomorrow we will hold negotiations with new partners and investors regarding the construction of the second nuclear power plant. Therefore, we are paying great attention to nuclear energy. Our uranium production is increasing significantly. We have invested heavily in uranium extraction and have accumulated capabilities and experience. Therefore, we have started the construction of the first nuclear power plant. We have plans for the second and third,” said Sh. Mirziyoyev.
The president did not specify the proposed locations, capacity, construction timelines, or project costs of the new nuclear power plants. It has also not yet been disclosed which investors will be negotiated with on October 17.
Uzbekistan’s first nuclear power plant is being built in the Farish district of the Jizzakh region. The project includes two VVER-1000 power units and two RITM-200N reactors.
Once the nuclear power plant reaches its projected capacity, it will generate approximately 15.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, meeting more than 15 percent of the country’s electricity needs.
