Horrific Avalanche in the Himalayas: Death Toll Reaches 15

Search and rescue teams have found the bodies of four more people who died as a result of an avalanche on the Himlung Himal peak (7,126 m) in the Himalayas on September 27, at the base camp (4,900 m).

elchi reports that the newspaper “The Himalayan Times” disseminated this information.

The bodies of 11 people were found earlier. The total number of victims has reached 15, with one person still missing.

More than 20 Nepalese high-altitude guides and trekkers arrived at the base camp from Kathmandu two weeks ago to prepare for the climbing season. They were preparing routes for climbers and setting up the camp. It was at this time that an avalanche hit the area. Contact with them was lost early Sunday morning. Rescuers have evacuated 10 people who were previously rescued from the camp area by helicopter.

The tragedy may have been caused by unusual weather conditions created by a cyclone originating in the Bay of Bengal region. According to the administration of the Manang district where the mountain is located, heavy snowfall and torrential rains occurred in the region last weekend, causing floods and landslides.
