Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that Iran does not want war with the US and is ready to reach an agreement through negotiations.
“Elchi” reports that Pezeshkian answered questions from “Fox News” in New York, where he traveled to participate in meetings to be held during the opening week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
When asked whether Iran prefers war or an agreement, Pezeshkian replied: “We do not choose war; war was forced upon us; we are not looking for war.”
Pezeshkian emphasized that Tehran is ready to move toward an agreement with Washington and referred to the agreement reached in June, which was later disrupted due to disputes over the Strait of Hormuz, and which initially envisioned the signing of a final peace treaty within 60 days.
Giving conciliatory statements against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between the two countries, the Iranian President added: “We had reached an agreement with your president (Donald Trump). Based on this, we are ready to move forward and we still want to do so.”
Pezeshkian stated that the choice of whether to end the war or not depends on the US.
Noting that Iran will comply with its obligations under international law and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Pezeshkian touched upon the issue of the Houthis in Yemen, saying: “The Houthis are responsible for their own actions. They do not take orders from us.” Pezeshkian also noted that about a month ago—amid various rumors circulating about his health—he met “personally” with Iranian leader Mojtaba Khamenei, spent about seven hours with him, and observed that his health was “excellent.”
