According to a study conducted in Scotland, 16% of businesses, including restaurants and hotels, believe that the increase in the use of weight loss drugs has led to a decrease in the number of customers.
“Elchi” reports that in a survey conducted by the Scottish Licensed Trade Association (SLTA) with the participation of 300 pubs, restaurants, and hotels, 22% of businesses noted that customers have become more selective in their dining and drinking choices outside the home.
Weight loss drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists have become one of the main factors on the agenda of these businesses.
They suppress appetite and change consumption habits
GLP-1 class drugs, which include medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, not only suppress appetite but also affect the functioning of the digestive system.
It is estimated that approximately 1.6 million adults in the UK use these types of weight loss drugs.
Colin Wilkinson, Chief Executive of the SLTA, stated that 16% of the businesses participating in the survey noted that weight loss drugs have caused a decline in visitor numbers.
Wilkinson noted that the sector is facing challenges not only from the widespread use of weight loss drugs but also from rising operating costs and a decrease in consumers’ disposable income.
