South Korea has announced that it will not send troops to the Strait of Hormuz. President Lee Jae-myung stated that while the country will protect the interests of its people and citizens, no troops will be deployed to the region to avoid involvement in foreign conflicts.
elchi reports that, according to the “Yonhap” agency, Lee said at a press conference regarding the Strait of Hormuz: “Let us be clear: no troop deployment that could lead to involvement in a conflict will be carried out. We will not enter or participate in a war.”
Emphasizing that not being involved in war has been their core principle so far, Lee noted that they will continue to adhere to this policy.
Lee stated that, like other countries, they will do their best to protect their citizens, ships, and crude oil transport routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
Possible summit between North Korea and the US
Answering a question about a possible summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Lee said, “This possibility is undoubtedly difficult, but it cannot be ruled out,” adding that he cannot definitively determine the probability of such an event occurring.
“It is clear that we must do our best to turn this possibility into reality,” said Lee, emphasizing that the resumption of dialogue between the US and North Korea would be an important step toward ensuring peace and stability, as well as improving relations on the Korean Peninsula.
