Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Armenia, Robert Abisogomonyan, stated that a large number of people have gone missing as a result of conflicts in the region over the last six years.
“Elchi” reports that during his speech at the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances meeting, he said that the right of families of the missing to receive timely and reliable information must be ensured.
According to R. Abisogomonyan, the solution to the problem should not be limited to legislation alone; cooperation between state institutions, training of qualified personnel, and regular communication with families must be ensured.
The Armenian official also mentioned that cases involving Armenian soldiers who allegedly went missing after being captured are causing concern within UN structures.
UN Committee experts, in turn, raised questions before the Armenian delegation regarding missing Azerbaijanis during the meeting. It was noted that alternative reports contain information about the disappearance of Azerbaijani children, hundreds of civilians, and military personnel in territories that were under Armenian control from the 1990s until 2020.
Experts requested an explanation from Armenia regarding investigations conducted to determine the fate of these individuals, as well as the exchange of information on mass graves and DNA samples with Azerbaijan.
At the meeting, citing a report by the International Commission on Missing Persons, it was noted that 3,890 Azerbaijanis, including 3,171 military personnel, are considered missing. The UN Office in Geneva has published a comprehensive summary of the discussions. (modern.az)
