As part of strengthening its defense capabilities, Japan plans to purchase approximately 52,000 unmanned aerial vehicles of various purposes between 2027 and 2031.

According to the agency’s sources, about 10,000 of these 52,000 drones will be long-range strike UAVs capable of hitting ground targets, and 7,500 will be reconnaissance drones. It is also noted that approximately 7 trillion yen (45 billion dollars at the current exchange rate) is planned to be directed toward the development of unmanned systems and artificial intelligence technologies.
It is intended to allocate more than 9 trillion yen (58 billion dollars) to equip the armed forces with means to deliver retaliatory strikes against targets in the territory of a potential adversary, including long-range missiles – which is six times more than what is provided for in the country’s current national security strategy.
