Repurchase of SGC eurobonds has reduced Azerbaijan’s external liabilities

In the first 6 months of 2026, Azerbaijan’s liabilities on portfolio investments decreased by approximately 2 billion US dollars.

“Elchi” reports that this was stated by Samir Nasirov, Director of the Statistics Department of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan, at a briefing dedicated to the disclosure of the balance of payments.

According to him, the main reason for the decrease in liabilities on portfolio investments was the repurchase of eurobonds issued within the framework of the Southern Gas Corridor project.

Samir Nasirov noted that this operation led to a reduction in Azerbaijan’s external debt obligations and a lightening of the financial burden.

It should be noted that in the first 6 months of 2026, a deficit of 3 billion US dollars was formed in the capital and financial account. One of the main factors of the deficit was the increase in foreign financial assets and changes in financial liabilities.
