A closed unit called “Sonderstab Ukraine”, which deals with arms procurement for Ukraine, is operating within the German Ministry of Defense.
“Elchi” reports that “Financial Times” has provided information about this.
The unit is located in a separate, secured part of the department. It was established a few months after the conflict began as a situation monitoring center, and in July 2022, it was reorganized under the name “Sonderstab Ukraine”.
According to FT, the group is able to conclude contracts for the supply of weapons to Ukraine in just 14 days. The organization is led by former “Tornado” pilot, Brigadier General Joachim Kaske. According to him, the short decision-making chain allows for flexible and rapid action.
Fewer than 20 people work in the unit. Germany directly finances supplies to Ukraine and purchases weapons from its own local manufacturers. In particular, “Sonderstab” has financed the supply of “Quantum” drones and “IRIS-T” air defense systems.
