The average global surface temperature in August reached 16.96 degrees, making it the hottest month ever recorded.
elchi reports that the European Union’s (EU) Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) has released global temperature data for August 2026.
According to the data, the global average surface air temperature in August was recorded at 16.96 degrees. This figure was 0.85 degrees higher than the average for August during the 1991–2020 period.
The temperature measured in August 2026 surpassed the 16.95-degree record set in July 2023, making it the hottest month ever recorded.
Last month, the global temperature was also 1.65 degrees higher than the pre-industrial average (1850–1900). As a result, the monthly temperature increase in August exceeded the 1.5-degree threshold for the first time since November 2025.
The summer season, covering June to August, was also the hottest summer recorded globally (tied with 2024), exceeding the 1991–2020 average by 0.69 degrees.
In Europe, the average temperature for August was 20.26 degrees. Although this figure was 1.10 degrees higher than the 1991–2020 average, August 2026 went down in history as the fourth hottest August ever recorded on the continent.
The average summer temperature in Europe was recorded at 1.17 degrees above normal. Thus, the summer of 2026 was identified as the third hottest summer recorded on the continent, following the summers of 2024 and 2022.
Western Europe experienced its hottest summer season on record, surpassing the 2003 record.
