The Ministry of Culture has published an obituary regarding the passing of People’s Artist Alexander Sharovsky.

It was stated that Azerbaijani culture has suffered a heavy loss:
“Prominent theater figure, director, and People’s Artist Alexander Sharovsky passed away on September 9, 2026, at the age of 78.
Alexander Yakovlevich Sharovsky was born on February 10, 1948, in Baku. In 1973, he graduated from the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages (now the Azerbaijan University of Languages).
Alexander Sharovsky began his career as an actor at the Azerbaijan State Theater of Young Spectators in 1967. From 1976, he linked his fate to the S. Vurgun Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theater, where he worked for 50 years. On this stage, he brought to life roles such as Rezo (“Premiere”, L. Roseb), Eldar (“House on the Sand”, R. Ibrahimbeyov), Sheikh Sanan (“Sheikh Sanan”, H. Javid), Farhad (“Farhad and Shirin”, S. Vurgun), Heinrich (“King Lear”, W. Shakespeare), and Mehmandarov (“Oil Boom”, M. Ibrahimbeyov) – in total, more than 50 characters were met with great interest by the audience.
Alexander Sharovsky served as an assistant director at the Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theater from 1978 to 1990, as a stage director from 1991, and as chief director from 1993 to 2026. During these years, he directed more than 50 plays.
The artist also appeared in films such as “The Unfinished Song” (1979), “The Structure of the Moment” (1980), “Don’t Be Afraid, I’m With You” (1981), and “Joke” (1989), and played interesting roles in television plays.
Known for his extensive public activities, the People’s Artist was represented on the Board of Trustees of the Baku International Multiculturalism Center.
Alexander Sharovsky’s long-term fruitful activity in the development of theatrical art in Azerbaijan was always highly appreciated by our state. He was awarded the honorary titles of “Honored Artist” of the republic (1987), “People’s Artist” (1998), and received the “Shohrat” Order (2008), “Sharaf” Order (2018), and the “President’s Honorary Diploma” (2023). He had been a Presidential pensioner since 2005.
The staff of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan expresses its sadness over the passing of the prominent theater figure, People’s Artist Alexander Sharovsky, and extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
