A single head appointed for the World Bank Group in Azerbaijan

Sacha Backes has been appointed as the head of the unified country representation of the World Bank Group (WB) in Azerbaijan.

“Elchi” reports that Sacha Backes has been appointed as the new head within the framework of the World Bank Group’s transition to a unified country representation model in Azerbaijan.

Although it was initially reported that he was appointed as the World Bank’s Country Manager for Azerbaijan, it was noted that Sacha Backes will lead the overall activities of the World Bank Group in Azerbaijan, including the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

The World Bank’s Azerbaijan office stated that Backes began his duties on September 1. It was noted that the World Bank Group is transitioning to a unified country representation model for all countries.

Prior to this, Stefanie Stallmeister served as the World Bank’s Country Manager for Azerbaijan. She stepped down from her position on July 1 due to the expiration of her term.

Sacha Backes previously worked as a Principal Investment Officer in the Manufacturing, Agribusiness, and Services team at the IFC in Europe. He has been with the IFC for over 17 years and has also been involved in project management in the Africa region.
