The death toll from the flood disaster in and around the Rasuwa region of Nepal, near the border with China, has reached 987.
“Elchi” reports that the Nepal National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority issued a statement on the social media platform of a US-based company regarding the floods affecting regions near the country’s border with China.
The statement indicated that the number of people who lost their lives in various regions affected by the floods has reached 987, and search and rescue operations are ongoing for 3,916 missing persons, 583 of whom are foreign nationals.
The statement also noted that 21,011 security personnel have been involved in search and rescue operations and that aid supplies have been sent to the flood-affected region.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the number of people who lost their lives in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region due to the floods in Nepal has reached 16.
Experts point to glacier collapse
The floods that occurred in Nepal’s Rasuwa region on August 26 destroyed dozens of bridges, damaged roads, and necessitated the deployment of helicopters for search and rescue operations.
The US Geological Survey, which initially reported an earthquake in the region before the floods, updated its data to state that the source of the 5.2 magnitude seismic activity was a glacier collapse.
Experts from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development based in Kathmandu stated that the floods were caused by an avalanche triggered by glacier fragments breaking off from the mountainous terrain.
