Around 22,000 people participated in the traditional tomato battle held in the town of Buñol, in the Valencian Community.
elchi reports that, according to the organizers, this year marked the 79th edition of the annual “Tomatina” festival.
During the one-hour “battle,” participants used approximately 150 tons of tomatoes, which is 30 tons more than in 2025. To prevent injuries, the vegetables are prepared in advance and kept at a specific temperature to ensure they are softer. To ensure safety, medical teams and law enforcement agencies are on duty throughout the city during the day. According to the local publication “Las Provincias,” at least four people sought medical assistance due to pepper spray used during the event.
In Buñol, a town with a population of less than 10,000, large-scale festive events are organized during the “Tomatina” days. The program includes fairs, competitions, and theater and music performances. Festival guests also have the opportunity to taste paella, Spain’s national dish. The celebration takes place before a week-long festival held in honor of the city’s patron saint, Saint Louis Bertrand. The first such “battle” took place in August 1945.
