Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara has signed decrees for the pardon and reduction of sentences for 4661 prisoners to mark the 66th anniversary of the country’s independence.
elchi reports that according to the statement from the Ivorian Presidency, the first decree signed by Ouattara granted a full pardon to 2064 prisoners, while the second decree reduced the sentences of 2597 prisoners who had less than 36 months of their sentence remaining. This decision paved the way for the release of a total of 4661 individuals convicted of minor crimes across the country from correctional facilities. Addressing the nation on the 66th anniversary of independence, Ouattara highlighted the economic and social progress achieved since Ivory Coast gained independence on August 7, 1960, and stated that the country’s future would be built on unity, hard work, discipline, solidarity, and mutual trust. Calling the youth the present and future of the country, Ouattara emphasized the role of women in development, the contribution of entrepreneurs to investment and employment, and the importance of farmers in ensuring economic prosperity and food security. President Ouattara called on citizens to take advantage of the economic opportunities offered by the country and to contribute to the development of Ivory Coast.
