Deputies from Spain’s ruling coalition have appealed to the government due to the migration crisis in Ceuta, calling for the withdrawal from co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Morocco.

It is expected that the 2030 World Cup matches will take place in six countries: the opening matches will be held in Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina, while the main stage will be hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
The agency clarified that the initiative came from the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party and the “Sumar” parliamentary group, which form the ruling coalition in the Congress of Deputies (the lower house of parliament). The deputies called on the government to notify the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), the Royal Spanish Football Federation, and the Portuguese government of the need to review and evaluate the joint organization model for the 2030 World Cup. In addition, they want an assessment of the impact of events at the Ceuta border on human rights obligations related to the tournament.
The agency notes that a similar initiative was previously taken by Portuguese deputies, who also expressed their opposition to Morocco’s participation as an organizer in the 2030 World Cup.
